HISTORY

Delaware Dance Company was founded over thirty years ago as “The Ballet School of Newark”.  In 1984, the non-profit “Delaware Dance Company” was incorporated as a performing group associated with the school.  In the early 90s, the school was absorbed into the non-profit and DDC now supports two performing groups, the Youth Dance Ensemble, for intermediate dancers 11 to 13 years, and the pre-professional DDC Performing Company, for experienced, high-school aged dancers. Devoted to bringing high quality dance education and performance to the northern Delaware, tri-state area, DDC classes are taught from a graded curriculum so that students in all classes at a given level work toward accomplishing and perfecting the same techniques. In addition to a ballet curricula that borrows from Royal Dance Academy and Cechetti syllabi as well as the curricula of the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, DDC offers the most accomplished Modern dance education in Delaware and classes in Jazz and Tap techniques.

Bringing dance to the community at large, DDC presents an annual Nutcracker which features DDC Performing Company members as well as auditioned students from DDC and other local schools.  Local professionals complete the cast and give the students a chance to work with professionals in a full scale ballet production.  In the spring, DDC alternates between full-stage productions such as the ballet Cinderella or the mixed style Tales from the Enchanted Forest with dance concerts that highlight DDC’s full range of dance techniques.  These performances are in addition to yearly June showcases that allow students to perform with their dance classes.

Delaware Dance Company welcomes students of all ages and ability levels.
